Our style editor, Parul, stays on top wedding trends coming straight from India. So, I am always excited to hear what she has to report.

In the world of Indian weddings, everyone is talking about Rakhi Sawant. Rakhi Sawant is the star of Rakhi ka Swayamvar, India’s version of the Bachelorette. She is an item girl, and known for speaking whatever is on her mind. Now that she has finally chosen her prince charming, India is buzzing about what she chose to wear for her engagement.

Since Rakhi inspired to look like a princess for the day, she chose to wear and original Neeta Lulla.  Neeta Lulla makes some of the most gorgeous lenghas in Bollywood and is responsible for dressing many leading ladies.  She designed clothes for Aishwarya Rai in movies like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Devdas.

Rakhi did make a few changes to this lengha to better fit her personal style. (The above right is the original and the left is Rakhi’s final look.) She changed the sleeves to resemble those of  Aishwariya Rai in the Jodha Akbar wedding scene.  She also removed the chuni from her head, so she could wear a head piece.

All of Rakhi Sawants jewelry is genuine kundan and was designed by Farah Khan, designer to the Bollywood stars. The combined total of her ensemble to over 1 crore rupees or over 200 thousand US dollars!  The ladies of MW generally agree that when it is your special day, you should wear the heaviest outfit that fits your personal style.  In Rakhi’s case, we unanimously concur that she went overboard, and her look is inflated. She has on out-of-this-world jewelry with a pulsating lengha, and the combination leaves them competing with each other instead of enhancing one another.

Building layers and thinking about how your bridal lengha and jewelry look together is the *key* to a beautiful look for your Indian wedding.
