Punta Cana, DR Fusion Wedding by Punta Cana Storytellers

Payal & Elvis’s love story is full of heartfelt moments and surprises, culminating in a vibrant Indian wedding set against the stunning backdrop of Punta Cana’s turquoise beaches.

The journey began in 2014 when they started dating, and from early on, Aruba held a special place in their hearts. On their first Christmas together, Elvis gifted Payal plane tickets to Aruba—turning their dream vacation into a cherished memory. Fast forward eight years, and Elvis planned the ultimate surprise: a proposal at the very same romantic beachside restaurant where their first vacation began. On June 22, 2022—exactly eight years after they first dated—Elvis got down on one knee as a photographer “captured” the moment, with the Caribbean sunset lighting their path toward forever.

Planning a destination wedding was a natural fit for the couple, especially with Payal’s experience as a wedding coordinator. The team they chose made every detail seamless, from their travel agent’s expert guidance to their wedding planner, Luisa’s flawless execution at Dreams Macao Beach Punta Cana. Payal’s hair and makeup artist kept her glowing despite the Caribbean heat, and the DJ flawlessly curated the soundtrack for every event, blending cultural beats with island vibes.

When it came to her bridal look, Payal surprised herself by embracing red—a traditional wedding color she hadn’t worn before. A friend’s discovery of a stunning lengha from India sealed the decision, and Payal radiated elegance in a look that was both traditional and true to her.

What truly stood out to guests was the immersive cultural experience. For many of Elvis’s family, it was their first Indian and destination wedding. Over three days, guests enjoyed vibrant ceremonies, lively dancing, and a delicious fusion of Indian and Caribbean flavors. Payal and Elvis crafted an atmosphere where everyone felt like they were on a joyous vacation rather than just attending a wedding.

One moment forever etched in Payal’s heart was her walk down the aisle, carrying a framed photo of her late father. As a prayer was said in his honor, a sudden Caribbean rain shower felt like a beautiful, spiritual blessing—turning a bittersweet moment into one filled with love and presence.

Payal and Elvis’s wedding was not just a celebration of their love, but a joyful blend of culture, family, and unforgettable memories—a true destination dream come to life.

Share the scoop on your Proposal Story!
Elvis and I started dating on June 22, 2014. Early on, he asked me what one place I’d love to visit, and without hesitation, I said “Aruba.” That Christmas, he surprised me with plane tickets to Aruba, making it our very first vacation together—a memory I’ve cherished ever since.

Fast forward eight years later: while I was away at a friend’s bachelorette party, Elvis called to tell me he had planned a weekend getaway… back to Aruba! As we finalized plans, I told him I wanted to recreate a photo we had taken at a romantic restaurant there called Passions on the Beach, completely unaware that he had much bigger plans in mind.

In June 2022, we returned to Aruba. On June 22, 2022—exactly eight years to the day since we started dating—we had dinner reservations at Passions on the Beach. As we walked toward the restaurant, Elvis suddenly said he had left his phone in the car. I refused to walk back with him because I was in high heels—little did I know he was actually going back for the ring he had hidden there!

When we arrived, a “restaurant photographer” approached us, saying she was taking pictures for their marketing materials and asked if we wanted to participate. Completely clueless, I agreed. She had us pose together, then asked me to pose alone. And while I was smiling for the camera, Elvis got down on one knee behind me. When I turned around, there he was, asking me to marry him with the Caribbean sunset as our backdrop. It was magical, emotional, and perfect in every way—a full-circle moment eight years in the making.

Tell us how you went about planning your wedding, and your overall experience with the Venues, Hair & Makeup, Outfits, Decor Theme, and all of the other important details.
It definitely pays off to be the last one in your friend circle to get married—you learn quickly what you want (and don’t!) for your big day. Being a wedding coordinator also made planning a destination wedding feel smooth and intentional.

All of our vendors made everything so easy. Our travel agent, Indian Destination Weddings, really listened to our must-haves and helped us land on Dreams Macao Beach Punta Cana—the perfect fit. At the resort, our planner Luisa was incredible: organized, responsive, and on top of every detail. Our photographers understood our vision and captured the emotion and energy exactly as we imagined.

For beauty, my hair and makeup artist Caroline simply delivered. I didn’t even do a trial—I just knew she was the one who’d make me look my best throughout every event. After our first night (Sangeet), it was super hot and humid, and the next day guests kept asking if I even sweat because my makeup was still flawless. She made sure my hair and makeup were on point from start to finish.

Music can make or break a celebration, and our DJ nailed it from the first call. We never once had to ask for a change—he understood our vibe and kept every event flowing with the perfect mix.

From outfits and jewelry to décor and color palette, everything tied together seamlessly because our vendors truly got us and made the process stress-free. With the right team, planning transformed from overwhelming to magical.

How did you select your bridal lengha or wedding dress? Did you have a favorite color in mind?
I’ve never been someone who wears red—I always felt like it didn’t suit me. But for my wedding day, I knew I wanted a traditional look, so I kept an open mind. I tried on several red lenghas at a local wedding boutique here in New Jersey. Some of them were beautiful, but none of them truly felt like the one.

Then one day, a friend of mine was scrolling through a shop in India and came across a stunning red lengha she thought I’d love. She sent it to me, and the moment I saw it, I knew. Even though red wasn’t a color I usually wore, this lengha felt perfect for my wedding day. I wore red for the first time, and I absolutely loved how everything came together—it was traditional, elegant, and so me.

What did your guests particularly love about your Wedding?
For so many of our guests, our wedding was full of firsts—especially for my husband’s side of the family. It was their first traditional Indian wedding, their first destination wedding, and for some, even the first wedding they had ever attended!

What they loved most was how interactive and immersive the entire experience was. Over three days, we had multiple events, each with its own energy, theme, and style—colorful outfits, upbeat music, delicious food, and lively dancing. Guests had the chance to fully experience the richness of Indian culture while also enjoying the beauty of a Caribbean vacation.

They loved that each event felt unique: the Welcome Night brought everyone together, the Grah Shanti and Haldi were vibrant and fun, the Wedding Ceremony was traditional yet romantic, and the Reception turned into a full-on party. Guests kept telling us how much they enjoyed dressing up for different events, dancing to a mix of Bollywood and Latin music, and eating food that blended cultures together beautifully.

What made us happiest to hear was that no one ever felt tired or “weddinged-out.” Instead, they felt like they were on a three-day getaway with friends and family—celebrating, laughing, relaxing by the beach, and creating memories that went far beyond a typical wedding weekend. It was exactly the atmosphere we hoped to create.

Was there a really special moment in your wedding that constantly replays in your mind?
One moment that replays in my mind over and over again is my walk down the aisle. Growing up, I always envisioned my dad by my side for that moment—it was something I dreamed about my entire life. But after losing him in 2022, I knew he wouldn’t be there physically. To honor him, I carried a framed photo of him as I walked toward the mandap. It was my way of bringing him with me into this new chapter of my life.

After Elvis and I exchanged garlands, the priest offered a special prayer for my dad. As he placed the tilak on my dads photo, the skies suddenly opened, and it began to rain. We were on a Caribbean island where, the entire week before and after the wedding, the weather had been perfect—sunny skies, no rain in sight. The only rainfall came at that very moment, during the prayer for my dad.

For me, it wasn’t just a coincidence—it felt like my dad was there, blessing our marriage in his own way. The timing was so powerful, so spiritual, that everyone there felt it too. It turned what could have been a bittersweet moment into one filled with love, presence, and comfort. It truly felt like my dad found a way to walk me down the aisle after all.

Day 1 of Engage!24: Island Treasures Welcome Party

The Engage!24 Amelia Island Summit at the luxurious The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island, was more than an event—it was an unforgettable journey into luxury, innovation, and celebration. This year, the summit kicked off in spectacular style with the Island Treasures Welcome Party, a dazzling evening designed to celebrate the rich history and treasures of Amelia Island while honoring the brilliance of the wedding industry’s best and brightest.

Set against the backdrop of Amelia Island's golden dunes and the expansive Atlantic Ocean, the Island Treasures Welcome Party was a feast for the senses. The décor seamlessly blended coastal natural elements with sophisticated luxury, creating a whimsical yet opulent atmosphere. The night’s tropical theme came alive with the presence of mermaid-like performers, while the space was adorned with nature-inspired linens, vibrant floral arrangements, and candles housed in jute and clear vases, evoking the allure of hidden treasures. Light installations and décor in shades of gold, aqua, and pearl bathed the venue in a luminous glow, perfectly reflecting the tropical ambiance.

The evening began with a breathtaking golden-hour view, where guests mingled with industry peers, sipping signature cocktails and savoring hors d’oeuvres that showcased Amelia Island’s finest local flavors.

The Island Treasures Welcome Party wasn’t just about celebrating the history and beauty of Amelia Island; it was also a nod to the true treasures of Engage!24—the attendees themselves. As the night progressed, the air buzzed with excitement and camaraderie. Ethereal sea creature performers roamed the venue, adding an enchanting element, while a live band energized the crowd with a mix of island-inspired melodies and contemporary hits.

The night reached its pinnacle with a surprise LED light show illuminating the sky, followed by a heartfelt toast honoring the dedication and creativity of the event organizers. With glasses raised, and the ocean breeze as their witness, attendees were reminded that the most valuable treasures are the relationships they cultivate and the magical experiences they create for their clients year-round.

Hello, Maharanis! Nestled amidst the sacred ambiance of the First United Methodist Church, Swetha & Melchisedek's journey began, resonating with promises of a lifetime. With each vow, the air became thicker with emotion, a testimony to the power of their love. Swetha's ethereal beauty, accentuated by the deft touches of Beauty Marked and adorned in the finest ensemble from Debra's Bridal, left everyone in awe. But, what truly dazzled were the radiant pieces from Givenchy and Nazranaa Jewels that complemented her glowing aura. The intricate Mehndi designs by Manu's Beauty Care whispered tales of ancient traditions and the bride's journey into marital bliss. The Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront transformed into splendor and romance as Swetha wore attire from Nazranaa. The magnificent decor by NJP Events & Design echoed their dreams, and the lighting set by DJ XFactor illuminated the couple's happiness, creating a celestial atmosphere. Their beats and melodies resonated joyfully, setting the stage for a night of laughter and dance. Each slice of the exquisite cake from Sweet and Chic Events tasted like heaven, while Riant Films impeccably captured the enchanting moments, immortalizing them in this beautiful film.

How did you meet your Groom and when did you know he was "the one"?
Melchisedek (or Jean, as most people & I call him for short) met in 2010 at the ages of 19 & 20 at the University of South Florida. Our first few encounters were in passing at the student center, thanks to our mutual friend (& later bridesmaid) Anita. Our real story begins, however, at a student event where Jean spotted me across the USF Amphitheater & asked me to dance bachata with him. I was hesitant at first, knowing that this Sri Lankan girl had no idea how to bachata, but I decided to take a chance & learn with this tall, dark, & handsome Haitian man. By the end of the night, we'd had such a great time that we exchanged numbers & continued to text through the rest of the night. Coincidentally enough, over the next few days, we realized that we were in two of the same classes. We became study partners, passing notes in class and studying together on campus. It wasn't long before our friendship grew into something bigger. Our relationship definitely stirred things up a bit; after all, an interracial couple (specifically a South Asian woman & a black man) was not the norm back then and was often considered “taboo” in both cultures. We took the negativity in stride, & it only helped us grow closer. One of the things that attracted me most to Jean was how important culture & family are to him, as both are so important to me as well. About 2 months into dating, he met my family in order to take us to the airport as we were traveling to Sri Lanka. At the time, because our relationship was so new, I introduced him as just a "friend." Regardless, he made such an effort to get to know my parents & ask about our culture. When we returned home, I felt this newfound connection to my roots, & Jean was so eager to hear all about my first time there. That's when I knew he was the one. Over the past 13 years of being together, that hasn't changed one bit & it's one of the things I love most about him. We make an active effort to learn about each other's cultures every day, never losing touch with our own roots but always eager to incorporate other cultures into our daily lives. Not to mention, he has been my biggest motivator & supporter since day one, always pushing me to be the best version of myself & cheering me on even when he can't physically be there.

Share the scoop on your Proposal Story!
It was nothing short of a dream come true, to say the least. On the eve of our 10-year anniversary, in the midst of the pandemic, & with the help of my family & friends, Jean pulled off a fairytale proposal - complete with twinkling lights, white clouds, balloons, & the song we first danced bachata to that fateful day playing in the background. At my childhood home, I walked in thinking I was going to a surprise party for my parents, & instead found a room filled entirely with balloons, twinkling lights, & fog. There, at the end of a pathway lined with flower petals & lanterns, stood my Prince Charming & our dog Aladdin, my Prince Ali, waiting with my dream ring. It was absolutely magical!

Tell us how you went about planning your wedding and your overall experience with the Venues, Hair & Makeup, Outfits, Decor Theme, and all of the other important details.
We always knew we wanted to have two ceremonies, a Christian ceremony & a Hindu ceremony & make every effort to incorporate both of our cultures into our wedding. It was no easy feat, planning two ceremonies & two receptions over two days. Thankfully, my sister Shankeer had gotten married the year before in a similar fashion & was such a huge help. Having planned two ceremonies + two receptions the year prior, she had done a lot of the research on vendors, venues, outfits, etc., for me. I honestly don't know how I could have planned everything without her! With her help, I was able to book most of my vendors early on, which saved us a lot of stress later in the planning process. For example, we knew we wanted to book Photos by Rob Futrell, our amazing photographer, as I fell in love with his work during her wedding. We also booked Beauty Marked FL again, as they did such an incredible job with my sister's bridal hair & makeup. For our Hindu Ceremony and reception bridal & wedding party outfits, I just knew we had to go through Nazranaa again, as we loved how everything turned out with our custom outfits & jewelry in my sister's wedding; & our wedding looks turned out even more beautiful than I could have ever dreamed of!

About halfway through the planning process, I realized that there were still several moving parts I needed help with. I decided to hire a wedding planner, & it was the best decision I could have made! Big Guava Events made the planning process much less daunting - helping me book the rest of my vendors, organize my ideas, create timelines & keep everyone on track & events moving on time during the wedding weekend. I definitely would have been lost without them!

How did you select your bridal lengha or wedding dress? Did you have a favorite color in mind?
Going through Shia with Nazranaa again was such a seamless process. We flew up to NJ & chose all of our outfits (bridal lengha, groom's sherwani, bridesmaids' lenghas, groomsens' sherwanis, bride & groom's reception outfits, & all jewelry) in just one day! I had a few colors & designs in mind, & Nazranaa helped bring my ideas to life. Our theme centered around royalty & peacocks for the Hindu ceremony and reception, so Nazranaa made sure to incorporate them into our outfits.

What did your guests particularly love about your Wedding?
The decor! NJP Events & Design did such an amazing job taking all of my ideas & bringing them to fruition. When I walked into our reception ballroom, I actually started crying. I was so happy that everything turned out exactly how I imagined it. Our royal & peacock theme was a big hit amongst my guests, as there were so many little details incorporated into the weekend - small gold elephants adorned the head table, peacocks sitting on swings hanging from trees with crystals & lights as centerpieces, bronze peacock statues perfect for photo ops, a large peacock fixture on the arch of the entryway to the mandap, multicolored peacock light up rings & customized glow sticks handed out to guests on the dance floor, & gold, silver & rose gold trinket boxes as favors.

Do you have any words of wisdom for Brides-To-Be?

Expect the unexpected & have multiple backup plans! Our Hindu ceremony was to be held at the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront on their River Deck, with a beautiful view of the St. John's River & the Main Street Bridge. There was a large Navy ship that docked right outside of our venue, completely blocking our riverfront view. This ship was supposed to be moved several months prior, but the move kept getting postponed. We had finally come to terms with this giant ship being the backdrop of our ceremony & had even changed our ceremony setup to have it only obstruct a part of the riverfront view, only to find out two days prior to the wedding that they were a hosting an outdoor Christmas party, complete with a dressed up Santa, drinks, & loud music at the same time & day of our ceremony! I was panicking - how could we hold a religious ceremony with a loud party right next to us?! We ended up having to move everything to an indoor ballroom. Thankfully, our wedding planner, Big Guava Events & decor vendor, NJP Events & Design, were able to work with the Hyatt & create a magical scene for our ceremony; & although it wasn't exactly what I had imagined, it was still beautiful in its own way.

I hope you enjoy this feature. Until next time, stay in love and keep celebrating every heartbeat.
