After the festive arrival of the baraat, the bride’s family welcomes the groom’s side. This starts the milni ceremony. Milni is the meeting of all the men from each family. It is a brief, yet impactful ceremony that should not be overlooked.
The men from the bride’s side welcome the men from the groom’s side, in descending order, starting with the oldest members to each family. The men exchange flower garlands and either cash or clothes are gifted from the bride’s side to the groom’s side. The typical order would be grandparents, then fathers, then uncles and lastly brothers. Usually, the balance isn’t perfect so cousins can fill in where needed. If you expect a lot of people at your baarat, I highly recommend using a riser (small stage) for the Milni. This way your guests will be able to see the exchange of garlands comfortably. Milni is an important tradition that honors all the important men in each of your families.
